IU Computer Vision Lab

David received the Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in 2008 and the M.S. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from Penn State in 2001. He was a Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell from 2008-2010, and as a Research Scientist at Eastman Kodak Company from 2001-2003. His main research interests are in computer vision, applied machine learning, probabilistic graphical models, and data mining.

Weslie received his Ph.D. in Food Science from Penn State University in 2019, and the B.S. in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2013. His research interests are in consumer behavior and perception of packaged goods and how AI can aid in healthy eating choices.

Starting at the Luddy School in 2015, Sarah has managed research programs, project finances, research centers, international research collaborations, and AI symposia. She received her BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is due to receive her MS in Accountancy from the Kelley School of Business in 2023. Her primary interest is forensic accounting.

Soon-heung received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea, and the BS degree in Electronics from Pusan National University, Korea. Since 2005, he has been a principal researcher in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Daejeon, Korea. His research interests include immersive media, computer vision, video coding, and realistic broadcasting system.

Hank was a research assistant at National Yang Ming Chioa Tung University in Taiwan from 2021-2024. Prior to this, he received his M.S. degree from National Tsing Hua University in 2020 and B.S. from National Taipei University in 2017. He was a research intern at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in 2020. His research interests include video representation learning, compositional representation learning, and robot learning.

With a background in Computer Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic and Sharif University of Technology in Iran, Sadie is currently pursuing a PhD, focusing on intelligent systems. She explores intersections of AI and its societal impacts, emphasizing responsible and equitable applications.

Zhenhua received his B.E. in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University (China) in 2012, and started to pursue his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2015. Before he joined IU, he also worked as a software engineer in HappyElements (Beijing) for two years and as an assistant researcher in NLPR (National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Beijing) for one year. His current research focuses on object detection.

Paul received his B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2018 and 2019. Following this, he entered industry for 4 years to work on radio frequency machine learning applications. He is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Indiana University Bloomington. His research interests are around how we can utilize and apply machine learning for event cameras and RF sensors.

Nilambar completed his B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from United International University (Bangladesh) and joined the Vision Lab in 2023. His research explores how machines perceive human attention and interpret three-dimensional visual environments. He also has a strong interest in robotics and its intersection with visual perception.

Ali received his M.Eng. from the University of British Columbia and B.Sc. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His general research interests lie at the intersection of computer vision and NLP.

Frangil received his B.Sc. in Mathematics and Information Technology from Cumberland University in 2023, and he started to pursue his Ph.D. in Computer Science at IU in the same year. His main research interest lies in egocentric video understanding, while also interested in generative models and applications to Cognitive Science.

Hiroki is currently pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science at IU. He completed his bachelor’s degree in music and computer science from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. His research interests are in computer vision and audio signal processing. He is passionate about both computer science and music.

Vibhas received the M.S. in Data Science from IU in 2021 and the B. Tech in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna, India in 2015. His research involves developing and applying deep learning-based techniques focusing on creating computer vision algorithms to generate and synthesize 3D models of visual scenes from 2D images.

Xizi Wang received her B.E. and M.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and started to pursue Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2019. As a master student, she has worked on image classification and object detection. Now her research focus is mainly on egocentric vision analysis and action recognition. During leisure time, she likes to play video games.

Yu received his M.E. in Computer Engineering from Jilin University in 2022 and began pursuing his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at IU the same year. His research primarily focuses on computer vision, with a current emphasis on audio-visual learning and interpretable artificial intelligence for vision applications.

Yuchen received his M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2017 and his B.E. in Software Engineering from Tongji University in 2011. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering with a Statistics minor. He is interested in computer vision research, especially on action recognition and video understanding.

Ziwei Zhao received his B.S. in Astrophysics from University of Science and Technology of China in 2015, and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2017. Currently he is interested in computational photography and video understanding.

Yue is a Ph.D. candidate at Indiana University. She majors in Computational Linguistics and minors in Computer Science. Her research interests are interpretability of NLP models, hybrid (neural and symbolic) methods, and artificial emotional intelligence. Before coming back to graduate school for her Ph.D. degree, she worked as a software engineer for Oracle and SUSE Linux. She also took an internship with Interactions LLC and worked on dialogue systems.

Alexander L. Hayes is a Health Informatics Ph.D. Student working on the Precision Health Initiative. His research interests are in statistical relational artificial intelligence (STARAI), graphical models, open source software; and applying each toward solving real-world health informatics problems. When not doing research he hangs out with his dog, hacks on open source projects, and gets bots to play games for him.

Sahaj holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from VIT-Vellore (2018) and a Master’s in Data Science from Indiana University (2020). He is currently pursuing a dual Ph.D. in Computer Science and Cognitive Science, investigating the intersection of deep learning, cognition, and computational neuroscience. Outside work, he enjoys biking, playing his guitar, and wrangling LLMs.

Zachary is a Ph. D. student at Indiana University majoring in Computer Science. He received his B.A. in Computer Science and Physics from DePauw University in 2020. His research focuses on exploring hybrid AI systems that use deep learning methods for image-based feature generation for retrieval in case-based reasoning models, and he has additional industrial experience as a technology intern with Eli Lilly & Company.

Yudai received his Bachelor’s in Engineering from the Department of Information and Computer Technology – Tokyo University of Science, Tokyo, Japan in 2024. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science at IU. His research interests are in computer vision, robot learning, and software engineering.

Zachery McCurtain is a Undergraduate Computer Science Major with a dual specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Game Development. In 2021 he began his independent study with David Crandall at the IU Computer Vision Lab. He is interested in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence, especially involving applications in Game Theory.

Anna finished up her BS in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence and is starting on her master’s through IU’s Accelerated Master’s program. She began research with Dr. Crandall in spring 2023, focusing on using computer vision and other technologies to improve social robots. She is interested in using technology for social good.

Danishjeet Singh is a Computer Science undergraduate with a dual specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. In 2022 he began to work as a Research Assistant under David Crandall at the IU Computer Vision Lab. He is interested in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.

Lucas Snyder is a junior undergraduate studying Intelligent Systems Engineering with a concentration in Bioengineering. He began working with Dr. Crandall at the start of 2022, performing research focused on animal tracking and data collection. He is interested in similar intersections between computer vision and biology.

William Valentine is a junior at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology majoring in Computer Science. His research interests lie within the intersection of Social Robotics, Cognitive Science, and Computer Vision. William is a research intern for this lab and IU’s R-House for the summer of 2025, working on social robots.

Sven received a B.Eng. degree with a focus in media and imaging technology from Cologne University of Applied Sciences in Germany (2010). He came to Indiana in 2011 and received his M.S. in computer science in 2013, Ph.D. in both Computer Science and Cognitive Science 2016, and was a Postdoc until 2018. His main research interest is in understanding egocentric video, from both technical and human perspectives. He is now with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Reza received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from George Mason University in 2018 and M.S. in Computer Science from Drexel University in 2011. He finished his B.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2007. His research focuses on developing novel algorithms for perception tasks such as semantic segmentation or object detection exploiting the 3D information. He is now an Assistant Professor at Drake University.

Homero received the Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from Sussex University in 1994, the M.Sc. in Computer Science, and the B.Sc. in Mathematics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1989, and 1987, respectively. Since 2000 he has been a Professor in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Veracruz. His main research interests are computer vision and machine learning.

Bardia received hid PhD in Computer Science at IU in 2021. Back in Iran, he received his BS in Pure Mathematics and his MS in Computer Science both from University of Tehran. His research is focused on using Graph-Convolutional and Convolutional Neural Networks for 3D Reconstruction and Hand and Object Pose Estimation. He is now with Google.

Kun’s work has studied Conditional Random Field Models for Structured Visual Object Recognition, presenting novel CRF-based solutions for three computer vision applications: human pose recognition, large-scale multimodal image clustering, and local attribute discovery for object recognition. He received his Ph.D. in August 2014 and worked as a Computer Scientist at GE before joining Snap in 2016.

Chenyou received his Ph.D. in 2019 and his M.S. in 2014 in Computer Science from Indiana University. He received the B.S. in Computer Science from Nanjing University, China. He is now an Associate Professor at South China Normal University.

Sam Goree received his Ph.D. from IU in Informatics in 2023, and his BA in Computer Science and Music Theory from Oberlin College in 2017. His research applies machine learning to creative and analytical problems in the arts. He is now an Assistant Professor at Stonehill College.

I am Eman Hassan, a PhD candidate in Computer Science. My main research interests are Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Computer Vision. Currently I am focusing on the use of generative models for domain adaptation, small object detection, and cross-domain retrieval.

Jeff’s research is in planning and decision making in multi-agent robotic systems. His thesis developed a general framework to efficiently compute navigation solutions in partially observable systems. He has since worked to integrate the framework tightly with computer vision to enable robust, camera-based navigation. He received his Ph.D. in September 2017 and since 2012 has worked as a robotics and software engineer at major automotive and Silicon Valley companies.

Mohammed’s Ph.D. research studied large scale textual and visual mining in social media under the supervision of Prof. David Crandall. His other research interests include Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Text Mining, Web Mining, and Soft computing. He received his PhD in June 2015 and is now Director of Data Scientist at CareerBuilder, Inc.

Jangwon received the Ph.D. in the Intelligent and Interactive Systems track of Informatics and is now an Assistant Professor at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU). He was a software engineer at Samsung Electronics before coming to IU. He received his B.S. in Information and Communication Engineering from SKKU in 2006 and his M.S in Electrical and Computer Engineering from SKKU in 2008. His interests are Human-Robot Interaction and computer vision for robotics.

Stefan received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of West Florida in 2011, his M.S. in Computer Science in 2013 from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. from IU in 2016. His thesis research was primarily focused on uncertainty in large-scale weakly labeled vision problems and inference in probabilistic graphical models. He is now an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University.

Shujon Naha received the Ph.D. in Computer Science from IU in 2023, his M.Sc. from University of Manitoba, Canada, and his B.Sc. from BUET, Bangladesh. He is now at Waymo.

Satoshi Tsutsui received his Ph.D. in Informatics from Indiana University, and is now a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University. He has broad interests in computer vision, particularly in its application to unique data. For instance, his dissertation analyzed wearable camera footage of infants, providing a distinct form of training data for machine learning systems.

Chuhua received his M.S. in Technology Management from New York University in 2014 and M.S. in Data Science from Indiana University in 2018. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. in Computer Science and his research interest is focus on object recognition and generative adversarial networks.

Mingze received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2020. Before that, he received his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2014 and his Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from Jilin University in 2012. His research interests are primarily in the area of computer vision and deep learning, especially on temporal modeling and reasoning in videos. He is now at Apple.

Ishtiak is currently pursuing his PhD on CS at IU. He completed his MS on CS from IU as well in 2016. His research is focused on deep learning and generative adversarial network. During pastime, he loves to explore photography, play billiard, or solve puzzles.

Haipeng’s work has studied how to use online and mobile data to estimate properties of and find connections in the physical world, demonstrated with applications to predicting consumer behavior, ecological events, mobile user properties, and concept relationships. He received his Ph.D. in August 2014 and is now an Assistant Professor at Shanghai Tech.

Zehua received his B.E. in Automation from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2015 and came to IU to pursue his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2016. He graduated in 2022, and is now an AI Research Scientist at Meta Reality Labs. He is interested in computer vision and machine learning problems in videos as well as graph convolution networks.

Yingnan Ju is a Ph.D. candidate in Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University, Bloomington. Prior to Indiana University, Yingnan received his master’s degree in Software Engineering from Peking University before working at Microsoft Research Asia as a software engineer. His research and development mainly focus on Data visualization, Computer Vision and Augmented/Mixed Reality (AR/MR).

Jingya received her B.E. from Nankai University in 2009 and her M.S. in Computer Science from IU in 2011. Her research interests at IU included computer vision and social media data mining, including finding insights in images with object recognition and scene classification techniques. She is now at CareerBuilder.

Keith received his M.E. in Computer Science from Tsinghua University in 2016, and he is currently pursuing Ph.D. in Computer Science at Indiana University. His research mainly focuses on video analysis, computer vision, mobile computing, and VR/AR.

Karan received his MS degree in Computer Science from IU in 2023. In 2020, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Savitribai Phule Pune University in India. Prior to joining IU, he worked at Wobot.ai, a Computer Vision SaaS startup that specializes in providing video intelligence solutions from CCTV cameras. At IU, his research focuses on the development of interpretable machine learning algorithms, particularly at the intersection of “black-box” image classification models and case-based reasoning.

Srimanth is a graduate student pursuing a master’s in Data Science at Indiana University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and worked at Accenture before coming to IU. He is interested in exploring deep learning-based computer vision models. Currently, he is working on 3D reconstruction. His research interests include depth estimation and diffusion models.

Pranav received his B.Tech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from SRM University, India. He is currently pursuing his M.S. in Data Science at Indiana University. Prior to joining IU, he worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant and a Machine Learning Engineer, mainly focusing on applying Computer Vision for healthcare applications. His current research interests are in Computer Vision, Deep Learning and Robotics, and their application in mental health and affective computing.

Jaydeep received his M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington in 2023. His master’s thesis under the guidance of Dr. Crandall was focused on investigating out-of-distribution generalization, spurious correlations, and supervised contrastive learning techniques for deep learning models in the image classification domain.

Ben graduated from Haverford College with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. He is a master’s student at Indiana University Bloomington focusing on computer vision. He worked for NVIDIA as a Solutions Architect intern in the summer of 2017, focusing on style transfer using deep learning. In his free time he runs, skis, and follows his unrealistic dream of becoming good at Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Evelyn is pursuing her M.S in Data Science. She graduated in 2019 with a B.S in Information Systems and a Computer Science minor. Her professional experience is centered in pharmaceuticals in Research Informatics and Security Analytics. She hopes to combine her knowledge in business, technology, and pharma for streamlining big data strategies in the healthcare space.

Devendra received his M.S. degree in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2015. His Master’s thesis work was on ‘Morphological classification of galaxies into spirals and non-spirals’ using computer vision and machine learning techniques under the guidance of Prof. David Crandall. He is now in the Ph.D. program at University of Texas at Dallas.

Gurleen completed his Master’s in Computer Science from IU. His focus area is deep neural network learning, object detection, and Generative Adversarial Networks. Currently he is working to deploy models on embedded systems. He interned at Google in summer 2017 and is now a Software Engineer at Microsoft. When not working, he sketches, follows video game releases, and watches rally-racing.

Mohammad received his M.S. from Sharif University of Technology in 2018 and B.S. from Amirkabir University of Technology in 2015 both in Electrical Engineering. His research focus is on self-supervised visual representation learning, also he is interested in variational autoencoders and graph convolutional networks.

Ferris completed the B.S. portion of his degree with a minor in mathematics in 2020. He has interned with Crowe as a software developer and ExxonMobil as a Data Scientist. He is the current president of the computer science club and AI club. His main research interest involves exploring techniques to visualize computer vision models for debugging purposes.

Yongming received his BS in Computer Science and BA Mathematics from Indiana University Bloomington in 2014. He is interested in medical image analysis and his master’s thesis involved retina optic disc segmentation for glaucoma and vision loss analysis. He also received MS in Computer Science from IU in 2020, and he is now in the PhD program at Purdue University.

Anuj is currently pursuing his M.S in computer science at IU. He graduated from Pune Institute of Computer Technology, Pune in 2017 with bachelor’s in Computer Engineering and worked in fintech before coming to IU. He is interested in exploring the intersection of deep learning and cognitive psychology. He has previously worked on problems like style transfer, 3d segmentation and is currently working on depth estimation from multiview images.

Sumit received his M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington in 2016. His master’s thesis work involved application of deep learning techniques in infrared spectrum images, fine-grained recognition and egocentric scene classification.

Griffin received his B.S in Computer Science from IU in 2019 and is currently pursuing a MS degree in Computer Science. He is interested in researching the intersection of computer vision and data visualization to produce more explainable definitions of AI.

Lucas Newman-Johnson received his B.S. in Computer Science and Philosophy from Amherst College in 2019. Now at IU pursuing a M.M. in Voice, he continues to pursue research in Computer Science and is interested specifically in questions of machine learning in adversarial settings.

Sripad is currently pursuing Master’s in Computer Science at IU. Prior to his Master’s, he worked as a ML Engineer at healthcare startup Onward Assist, building tools using computer vision to assist pathologists and radiologists in early cancer diagnosis. He is interested in Semantic segmentation, self-supervised learning, and 3D reconstruction research. He likes to spend his free time traveling to new places.

Abhiroop is a master’s student in Computer Science at Indiana University Bloomington. Before joining IU, he worked as an ML Engineer at Onward Assist, a healthcare startup where he developed computer vision algorithms to aid pathologists and radiologists with early cancer diagnosis. His current research is focused on pioneering applications of diffusion models, particularly in depth map refinement, depth map super-resolution, 3D reconstruction, and voxel super-resolution.

Xiwen received his B.S. in Computer Science at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He is currently pursuing a MSCS degree in WUSTL and is visiting IU in Summer 2019. He is interested in designing deep learning models to solve computer vision problems. During his visit to the lab, he was mainly working on application of capsule network on image segmentation and satellite image 3D reconstruction.

Saurabh received his M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2020. His Master’s thesis work under Prof. David Crandall was on Bayesian Uncertainty Estimation methods for Deep Learning. His thesis focused on the tasks of Semantic Segmentation, Accent Identification, and Sentence Classification. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Ryder graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He is continuing his education with a Master’s of Science in Data Science at Indiana. When not studying, he enjoys playing fetch with his dog, fantasizing about space flight, and trying to find the best noodles in town.

Ramya received her M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University. Previously she was a software engineer at Accenture Services Private limited, and received her B.E. in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Visveswaraya Technological University in 2012.

Harsh received the M.S. degree in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2015. His Master’s thesis work (under the guidance of Prof. David Crandall) involved developing automated answering apps for the visually impaired, using Google Glass. He is now at Sears.

Shaurya is a graduate student pursuing master’s in Data Science at Indiana University. Prior to start his masters, he was working as Data Scientist and developed solutions involving NLP to analyze the data, improve upon the optimisation of the algorithm. Currently, he is working on computer vision and interested in image segmentation, depth estimation.

Manu Singh received his Masters degree in Computer Science from the School of Informatics and Computing in 2016. His master’s thesis work involved investigating tag selection and propagation methods for large scale social image classification. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning and data mining. He now works as a Cognitive Engineer at IBM Watson.

Tiangang Song received his Masters degree in Computer Science from the School of Informatics and Computing in 2015, and received his B.E. from Wuhan University in 2013. His Master’s work investigated semi-automatic recognition using Human-in-the-loop techniques. His research interests include computer vision and machine learning. He now works at ESRI.

Naveksha received her MS in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington in 2022. Her research interests are computer vision, explainable AI, time-series analysis and natural language processing. She completed her thesis in the guidance of Dr. Crandall on building activation atlases to explain neural networks.

Katie is currently pursuing her degree in computer science, with research interests in anomaly detection, mathematics, data visualization, and applications of computer vision to health and education, like her thesis detecting dyslexia with neural networks. She worked at IBM Research in the summer of 2018 on neuromorphic computing, and will be returning there full-time. She hopes to potentially get a PhD and become a corporate research scientist.

Manasi received her Bachelors in Information Technology from Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Anna University, Chennai, India in 2021. She is currently working towards her Masters degree in Computer Science at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests lie in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning algorithms, and she is currently working on Sentiment Analysis.

Nikhil received his B. Tech in Computer Engineering from K J Somaiya College of Engineering in India and came to IU to pursue his M.S. in Computer Science. He is interested in applying deep learning techniques for solving Computer Vision tasks. He has worked on a wide variety of problems including object detection, style transfer, 3D Segmentation, and is currently working on 3D scene reconstruction from single-view and multi-view images.

Ali received his B.S. in Software Engineering and M.S. in Information Technology from Amirkabir University of Technology (Iran). He joined IU in 2014, where his research focused on detecting objects and activities using deep neural networks, improving reliability and interpretability of deep models by understanding adversarial attacks, and studying mental health with social media. In January 2018, Ali transferred to KU Leuven (Belgium) as a Ph.D. student in Engineering Science.

Raunak received his M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington in 2020. His master’s thesis work was on Generative models for the automatic generation of 2-dimensional layouts in visual design. He now works as a Software Engineer at Amazon Alexa.

Tingyi is currently a Ph.D. student in the Intelligent Systems Engineering department at IU. His current research direction is Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and Neural Imaging. He received his M.S degree at Indiana University in 2016, majoring in Computer Science and working in the Computer Vision Lab.

Violet received her B.S. in Informatics and BA in Mathematics from IU in 2016. She is currently pursuing a MS degree in computer science. She is interested in studying the intersection of human and machine vision, neuro-inspired machine learning and scientific applications of computer vision.

Dennis is a senior in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Olin College. He was an undergraduate intern at IU during Summer 2014. His research interests include deep learning and applying computer vision to image classification problems.

Demetris studied Artificial Neural Networks at IU during the summer of 2015. He is an undergraduate student in the 5th year of his 3/2 engineering program, and plans to graduate in the Fall 2016 with degrees from Auburn University and Berea College in Electrical Engineering and Applied Math and Sciences.

Kai is currently a Computer Science undergraduate student at Fudan University and visited the IU Computer Vision Lab in Summer 2019. His research is focused on computer vision applications using deep learning, especially in object detection and segmentation. During his visit in IU, he was mainly working on automatic image segmentation, human-inspired computer vision, and satellite image 3D reconstruction.

Russell, CEO and Founder of Ornicept, is a passionate entrepreneur and computer scientist. He left the lab to pursue the commercialization of his computer vision research created under Professor Crandall’s mentorship. This research continues today under a Department of Energy grant. At Ornicept, he leads the development of SPECTEO, an enterprise software package designed to improve the collection, processing, and accuracy of data and fieldwork for engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Tayla is an undergraduate student at Mississippi Valley State University. She studied handwriting recognition and scoring to study child development at IU in Summer 2015.

Gustavo is an undergraduate student at Dillard University. He studied object recognition and tracking for quadcopter at IU in Summer 2014.

Paul is a Ph.D. student at Cornell University. He studied accelerating computer vision algorithms with GPUs in 2011-2012.

Jerry Gu studies Computer Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China, graduating in 2020. He was intern at IU in Fall 2019, working on image recognition and classification for several projects including an interdisciplinary application with the Department of Chemistry.

Emmanuel Klutse is an undergraduate majoring in Computer Science at Tougaloo College. His research focus for IU’s NSF REU program was Image Based Matching and Text Detection on Integrated Circuits. He plans on furthering his Computer Science education by earning a Master’s, and possibly a Ph.D. in either Computer Science or Software Engineering.

Alan is a sophomore majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He was a student in the summer of 2017 and worked on the project, Examining Computer Vision Techniques for Providing Useful Information to People with Visual Impairments. On the UIUC campus, Alan spends most of his free time involved in other research topics or in engineering groups.

Jackson Miller is an undergraduate senior studying Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence. In the summer of 2023, he began his role as a Research Assistant under David Crandall in the IU Computer Vision Lab. He is interested in computer vision and other topics in artificial intelligence.

Ben is now a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University. At IU, he worked with Profs. David Crandall and Chen Yu on eye tracking for studying child learning.

Abe worked in the Computer Vision Lab as a senior at Brown County High School, and is now an undergraduate student at Stanford University. His research interests include reinforcement learning, data visualization, and the mathematical foundations of machine learning. His long-range goal is to study quantum computing and quantum algorithms.

Ethan is a Computer Science and Mathematics double major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, graduating in 2018. He worked with Dr. David Crandall to use deep learning to study attention in driving. The research focused on teaching a convolutional net to extract the most relevant regions in high-resolution video data.

Gerald Pineda is a Computer Science and Studio Art double major at Depauw University, graduating in 2020. He worked with David Crandall and former partner, Emmanuel Klutse, in testing different approaches to do image matching for integrated circuits. He hopes to do more work with Computer Visions or User Experience Design in order to pursue his love for computers and the arts.

Alejandra is an undergraduate at Case Western Reserve University. She interned at the IU Computer Vision Lab in the summer of 2019 focusing her research on computer vision for food recognition, studying both the models and their ethical implementations.

Tyler is a student at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, studying Computer Engineering and Computer Science, 2018. Personally interested in computer vision, artificial intelligence, deep learning, neural networks, and embedded systems.

Fiona graduated from IU with degrees in Computer Science and Clarinet Performance in 2020. Her research interests are in computer vision and perception, with emphasis on applications to healthcare and understanding human behavior. She interned at Google during the summers of 2019 and 2020, working on computer vision within Google Nest and Google Health respectively. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Zunaeed is an undergrad at IU studying Computer Science w/ an AI specialization, while minoring in Mathematics. He is working at the Computer Vision lab to fulfill his Cox Scholarship work component, while simultaneously familiarizing himself with tools and applications of CV and AI as a whole. He will be interning at Discover Financial Services as a Software Developer in the summer of 2020.

Alex worked on deep learning for scene classification in Summer 2014 while an undergraduate at Earlham College. He is now a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at Indiana University.

Anubhab Sen is a student at IIIT Hyderabad, India, studying Computer Science and Engineering, graduating in 2019. He worked with David Crandall in making a system that can identify notes played and fingers used from a piano video. His research is primarily focused on 3D reconstruction and pose estimation. He enjoys all the new exciting developments in computer vision and the underlying deep learning.

Joshua investigated color distributions on Flickr at IU in Summer 2013, while an undergraduate at worked on deep learning for scene classification in Summer 2014 while an undergraduate at Norfolk State University.

Dylan is a Computer Science and Mathematics double major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, graduating 2019. He worked on evaluating viability and reliability of various computer vision techniques for application towards helping visually impaired people.

Guangyuan is an undergraduate student majoring in computer science at ShanghaiTech University. He began his research internship at the IU Computer Vision Lab in Summer 2020. During his internship at IU, he mainly focused on constructing data splits to train an action recognition model with better generalization by using a graph convolution model. He has broad interests in computer vision, especially in compositional and multimodal visual reasoning.

David investigated optical music recognition in summer and fall 2013.
